Swim Thong vs Underwear Thong: What’s the Difference?

Two male models wearing GIGO swim and underwear thongs, comparing a pink swim G-string with black lace thong underwear.

A swim thong and an underwear thong can look nearly identical, but they are designed for different situations. A swim thong is intended for water, beach and pool use, while an underwear thong is designed to be a comfortable first layer for everyday wear. At Gigo, that distinction includes the fabrics and the choices made in construction—even when two garments list the same fiber percentages.

Swim thong vs underwear thong: what actually changes?

The visible cut is not the entire story. A G-string is one of the most minimal thong-style constructions, with a front panel and very narrow rear coverage. Both underwear and swimwear can use that silhouette, yet the intended environment changes what the designer needs the garment to do.

  • Swim thong: designed to be worn in water and to stay comfortably positioned as the wearer moves in and out of it.
  • Underwear thong: designed to be worn as an intimate layer through everyday activities, with prolonged skin contact and comfort in mind.
  • Both: should fit securely without excessive pressure, uncomfortable movement or constant readjustment.

If you are new to this minimal cut, our men’s G-string fit and coverage guide explains how to evaluate the front panel, waistband and back strap before choosing a design.

Why the fabric label doesn’t tell the whole story

Two garments can list the same percentage of nylon and spandex without using the same actual fabric. Fiber composition describes the ingredients, not every detail of how a textile is made, finished or used in a finished garment.

For example, Gigo’s Dinamic Black Swim G String and Redemotion Black G String both have a declared composition of 75.79% nylon and 24.21% spandex. Gigo’s product team confirms that the fabrics are different: the Dinamic style belongs to swimwear and the Redemotion style to underwear.

That does not establish exact differences in drying time, opacity when wet, stretch recovery or resistance to a particular chlorine concentration. Gigo has not documented a side-by-side wet-and-dry test of these two models, so those individual performance claims should not be assumed from the shared fiber percentages.

Can you swim in a regular underwear thong?

Gigo recommends choosing a swim-specific G-string for the pool or ocean, rather than treating an underwear G-string as interchangeable swimwear. Underwear may look similar, but it is not necessarily built for exposure to pool chemicals, salt water, prolonged immersion or repeated wet-and-dry use.

The important distinction is intended use, not a promise that swimwear lasts indefinitely. Chlorine, salt and heat can still affect swimwear over time. Choosing a piece designed for swimming and caring for it afterward are both sensible steps.

Check the venue’s dress code, too. Some pools restrict underwear, and others may prohibit thong-style cuts even if they are sold specifically as swimwear. A garment labeled “swim” is not an automatic exception to a facility’s rules.

How should a men’s swim thong fit?

Gigo’s product team focuses on how the garment feels and stays in position during movement, not simply how minimal it looks in a photograph. When trying on a swim G-string, pay attention to the following:

  • Waist and hips: the waistband should sit securely without digging in or slipping.
  • Front panel: there should be comfortable room and support without excessive compression.
  • Movement: walk, bend and change position to assess whether the fit feels stable rather than constantly needing adjustment.
  • Cut and coverage: choose the minimal silhouette you actually want, instead of sizing down to make a garment look smaller.

Do swim thongs and underwear thongs use the same size?

Not necessarily in how they feel. At Gigo, sizing starts with the official waist measurement guide, which covers underwear and lower-body swimwear. However, fabric, cut and style-specific construction can influence the fit of an individual model.

Measure your waist where the waistband normally sits, read the size information on each product page and follow any model-specific instructions. If your measurement falls between sizes or the advice for a model is unclear, contact the Gigo team with your waist measurement and the exact product name rather than assuming every G-string fits identically.

How should you care for a swim G-string?

After swimming, rinse your swimwear with fresh, cool water to remove pool or sea residue. Follow the garment’s care label for washing, avoid excessive heat and allow it to dry fully before storage. These habits help care for elastic fibers, but do not make a garment immune to wear.

Do not apply this swimwear routine as proof that an underwear G-string has the same performance or durability in water. They are different product categories for a reason.

Which G-string should you choose?

Choose a swim G-string when your plans include a beach, pool or other water activity and the location permits the cut. For everyday underwear and intimate styling away from the water, explore Gigo Men’s G Strings.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear my regular thong in the pool?

Gigo recommends swimwear made for water use rather than an underwear thong. Also check the facility’s policy: both underwear and thong-style swimwear may be restricted.

Are swim G-strings and underwear G-strings made of the same material?

They can list the same fiber blend without being the same fabric. Gigo’s Dinamic Black Swim G String and Redemotion Black G String share declared nylon/spandex percentages, but the product team confirms different fabrics are used.

Should I order the same size in both?

Start with the applicable size chart for each model and any product-specific fit guidance. Do not assume identical fit from the size label alone.

Ready for the water? Shop Gigo Men’s Swim Thongs and choose the cut and size intended for your next swim. The right look should also be the right garment for the occasion.
